EDC Market in North American
Vertical integration in North America has allowed PVC producers to also produce their own EDC. Oxy Vinyls is the top EDC producer in the world with over 5.7 million tons of capacity in the United States. The company is integrated downstream to PVC and represents 31% of the regional EDC capacity. After the Axiall acquisition in 2016, Westlake has become the second top producer of EDC in North America, with about 25% of the regional capacity. Shintech has EDC capacity of about 3.1 million tons, and after its recent vinyls chain expansion has moved to third place. Dow sold its assets to Olin in October 2015. Now Olin has EDC capacity of 2.9 million tons, but is not integrated downstream into PVC production. Formosa Plastics has about 12% of the regional EDC capacity with a little over 2.2 million tons per year. Most of the EDC produced in North America is consumed in the region into the vinyls chain and some also goes into Ethylene amines and chlorinated solvents production. However, North America remains an important supply source of EDC to other regions, especially Asia. Since the start-up of the Dow/Mitsui chloralkali joint venture in 2014, now with its assets owned by Olin, the volume of EDC exports from the United States has improved. All major PVC resin producers in North American are integrated into chlor-alkali, with the exception of CertainTeed.
