Fire at ExxonMobil Baytown chemical facility continues
A fire at ExxonMobil's Baytown, Texas, olefins complex will be allowed to burn itself out. The fire started July 31th morning in a propylene recovery unit, which separates propylene from propane. Houston television stations broadcast live aerial footage of the fire, which Duncan said was isolated to that unit. Thirty-seven people were treated for minor injuries. Duncan declined comment on production rates at the olefins plant or adjacent refinery complex. The city of Baytown, east of Houston, meanwhile, has lifted earlier issued shelter-in-place orders for areas west of the fire during the blaze, between Texas State Highway spur 330 and the Houston Ship Channel. ExxonMobil spokeswoman Sarah Nordin said that company crews worked to extinguish the blaze and industrial hygiene staff conducted air quality monitoring at the fence line. US spot polymer-grade propylene prices fell on Wednesday despite the fire and were assessed down 0.50 cent at 37.75 cents per pound FD USG. However, ethylene prices were assessed up 0.25 cent to 16.75 cents per pound FD USG. ExxonMobil's Baytown olefins complex has three crackers with a combined capacity of more than 3.6 mta, including a new 1.5 mta facility that started up last year. ExxonMobil's Baytown complex also has a 560,500 bpd refinery. US Gulf Coast gasoline sources said that cash markets jumped higher after news of the fire at Baytown hit the market in the early afternoon but that differentials quickly pared those gains from earlier in the day.
